This palm grows at low altitudes in humid deciduous forests.

Normally acaulescent , with a subterranean trunk, it is considered to be one of the species which is most tolerant to cold.

It can thrive in sunny spots and shady ones alike and is generally not demanding.

Its flower clusters stick out vertically above the leaves.
