This species is found in humid tropical rainforests by the banks of the river Mekong.

It is excellent for med gardens and/or keeping in pots. Curiously it is always clustered when it grows spontaneously in its natural habitat, but it has only one trunk when it is a cultivated plant.

It is rustic as far as soil type is concerned and can withstand drought. If it is growing in rich soil where water is plentiful it can grow at a good rate.

In very lime-rich soils it can suffer from a lack of magnesium and potassium.
