Very widespread in tropical rainforest in southeast Asia.

It is rarely found in gardens in southeast Europe and withstands the cold less than the aforementioned Livistona.

Its petioles are very spiny, its leaves a deep green and its fruit light blue.

It needs rich, well drained and damp soil to grow successfully. In dry climates it prefers to be situated in semi shade.
