It is practically extinct in its native homeland where it lives in tropical savannahs. It is a palm which is set aside for gardens with a warmer climate as it is hardly resistant to the cold (any temperature below 8 to 10 degrees centigrade and high humidity will affect it very negatively) .

It is a very striking palm which is different to other species we may have in our gardens. Its trunk is very wide at its base and its crown has only a few leaves.

It prefers sunny sites and an abundant supply of water in summer. It is resistant to saline winds and to drought.
