It is native to the woody coastal areas of the Mascarene Islands where it is an endangered species.

This species has several varieties. album, with green petioles and a whitish crownshaft; rubrum, with a reddish crownshaft, and aureum, with leaves and a crownshaft of a yellowy orange hue.

It needs a sunny location, high temperatures and humidity to thrive.

It tolerates strong winds, providing they are not dry and can also grow right by the sea.
